Tryphena House - Aotea, Great Barrier Island

Tryphena House is a unique property right on the water, boasting its own small private pebble beach with panoramic views of Tryphena Harbour framed by Pohutukawa Trees. Formerly Great Barrier Islands post office, Tryphena House was built in the 1920's on the Eyre Homestead and is nestled in a unique location in Puriri Bay. Step off the deck, and a few metres to the bottom of the garden and you'll find yourself in the ocean. We are a scenic 2km along the bay from Tryphena, secluded but easily accessible. The house belongs to Pete & Lucy and has separate guest space for people to enjoy the spot and the Barrier as much as they do.

The Space
Inside - We can sleep and host up to 16 people in seven rooms, both double and bunk rooms. The house is old but full of character, equipped with fresh new linen & towels to make your stay comfortable. Kitchen & dining facilities include sink, toaster, jug, gas hob & fridge freezer with a beautiful sliding window to outside servery for the warm summer months. Plus a large dining room table with panoramic views of Tryphena Harbour. There's ample living space with sofa's, a pool table & open fire in a snug second lounge. (TV & WiFi available but most people like to make the most of our surroundings).

Outside - You'll have access to all our garden space, extensive decks, BBQ and brazier (if no fire ban is in operation).Plus our two spectacular roll top outdoor heated baths mounted on a deck overlooking the bay for our guests. Lay back, take in the magical scenery and relax under the Barriers pristine night skies. We have a newly installed solar power system which means we rarely rely on the generator & consistently have enough power to run a jug, toaster, charge our electric bikes and warm electric blankets through the cooler winter months. Basic appliances to most people - but a real novelty on the Barrier!

Gear for your Island Adventure
Guests have free access to kayaks, paddleboards, fishing gear which can be launched straight off the front garden when not out on hire. Our scooters are also available for guests to hire during their stay.

For those arriving by boat, there is safe anchorage right in front of the house. Please call to enquire, we can often find access to moorings too.
