Bushwalks and Tramping.

Great Barrier Island has over 20 tracks and trails making up more than 100 kilometres of bushwalking paradise.
From the 10-minute scramble to the top of the Windy Canyon to the popular ‘Over The Top’ Mt. Hobson marathon of 6 hrs there really is something for everyone.
You’ll find incredible Kauri dams, natural hot springs, waterfalls and swimming holes all surrounded by beautiful regenerating forest.
If you intend exploring unguided be sure to let someone know of your intended route, destination and anticipated completion time before setting off.
A track drop-off and pick-up service is available and makes it possible to enjoy the walks without having to retrieve cars etc.

The Department of Conservation have put together a great trampers map that contains an easy to understand track number system and relevant information for each walk, it is a must for anyone about to hit the trails. The maps are available at most island shops, at the Conservation Dept: office in Port Fitzroy or call us if you’d like a copy posted to you.
Alternatively, take a guided bushwalk with one of our local operators and enjoy an interesting commentary as you go along.
Remember to take water and clothing suitable for the terrain and weather conditions and do stick to the tracks.

Mountain Biking.

Sea And River Kayaking.

Great Barrier Island is a kayakers’ paradise. The western shoreline is enhanced with sheltered coves and in-lets and the main harbours of Tryphena, Okupu, Whangaparapara and Port FitzRoy afford the adventurer plenty to explore and enjoy.

Great Barrier Kayaks operate out off Tryphena and offer an awesome array of kayak adventures including picnic lunches in private bays, snorkelling trips and moonlight excursions. Kaitoke River Kayak Hire has their base at the Kaitoke Bridge right on the river.
They have a large range of kayaks available for private hire if you prefer to ‘go it alone’.
The Northern end of Kaitoke Beach and the further reaches of the Kaitoke Swamp are
both within easy paddling distance and are a safer option for those not keen on getting
out in the ocean.

Hooked On Barrier hires out a range of kayaks for private use around the island. They also have a huge range of fishing, diving and camping equipment available for hire and sale. You’ll find wetsuits, surfboards, bait and tackle and all the accessories you need.

Golf Club, and Great Barrier Island Sports Club.

Great Barrier Island Golf Club Inc: have their 9-hole course and clubrooms just past the sports club on the Whangaparapara Road north of Claris. The club is open on Thursdays and Sundays but visitors with their own clubs are welcome to use the honesty box facility and enjoy a round of golf on non-club days.
The course is a credit to the hard work of the members and committee. Visitors will enjoy the sheltered location and layout of the course and enjoying a beer or wine with the friendly locals after the game will top off a great day. Enquiries: 09 4290 420

Great Barrier Island Sports & Social Club is situated at the beginning of Whangapara Road,

just 200 metres from the Crossroads.
Here you’ll find a great variety of sports to enjoy. Touch football, rugby, tennis, cricket, pool, table tennis and darts. The clubrooms feature a fully licensed bar and the kitchen serves full meals and fish, chips and burgers etc.and are open from 4 pm on Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays.
