All D.O.C. campsites have basic facilities i.e. toilets, water supply and except for 'The Green' at Whangaparapara; cold water showers.
Open fires are not permitted at any D.O.C. campgrounds, so please bring your own gas or fuel powered cookers.
Dogs and alcohol are also banned from D.O.C. campgrounds.
The campgrounds have a specified number of tent sites. Be sure to book early if you're planning on camping around Christmas and New Years.

Akapoua Bay campsite
A popular family camping area near the sheltered waters of Port Fitzroy.
Easy access to many of the island's walking tracks.
Awana Beach campsite
Set beside the Awana estuary and a 10 minute walk along the estuary to
Awana surf beach. Popular with surfers and younger groups.
Minimal shade.
Harataonga campsite
Remote and beautiful. A short walk from spectacular Harataonga Beach.
Mature trees and creeks divide this sheltered campground.
Popular family campground . Good fishing.
Medlands Beach campsite
Situated beside the Medlands Stream and behind the sand dunes.
This is a well sheltered and sunny campground. A popular choice through
summer and potential campers need to book in advance.
The Green campsite
This is the smallest D.O.C. campground on the island.(only 15 tent sites)
It is situated on the northern side of the harbours head and is accessabile
by track, 10 minutes from the Whangaparapara Road.
Very popular base for trampers.
No shower... but it is only 15 minutes walk to Great Barrier Lodge.
Whangapoua campsite
This campsite is fairly exposed but enjoys stunnung views of Rakitu Island,
Mt. Hobson and the surrounding mountain ranges.
Situated beside the Whangapoua Estuary and close to the Okiwi airstrip.
Very popular with surfers. |
